Egg-cellent!

Our little red hens spend all day outside in the sunshine, scratching in the fields looking for tasty things to eat. We put their house on wheels so we can move it around so they always have fresh pasture to explore. They go inside only at night to sleep and to lay their eggs. They lay the most lovely brown eggs with deep yellow yolks that we hand gather every morning. Since our girls are out in the fresh air and clean pasture they stay healthy and vibrant. We never give them antibiotics or hormones of any kind and they’re not eating corn or soybeans since we don’t grow those crops here on our farm. You can purchase their beautiful eggs at our farm store along with duck eggs from one of our neighbors, if you have a chicken egg allergy. Right now we also have goose eggs that our sweet gray goose Gertie is laying. They are perfect for crafting and Easter is just around the corner.

The babies are here!

It’s that time again… the babies are here! The very first goat to kid had triplets and it hasn’t slowed down much since then. We haven’t had any more triplets, but most of our goats have twins so it adds up quickly. We’re currently at forty five. About half of the goats that had babies were new mommies so it was the first time they were milked. Most of them are fine with that but there’s always a couple that will jump straight up in the air those first few times. Once they realize it doesn’t hurt they settle down pretty quickly. The babies are all doing well. They stay in the back of the barn where it’s the warmest and free of drafts. We’ve had a few days that were warm enough to let them go outside and they of course loved that. Spring will be here soon and then they’ll be able to spend more time outdoors.
